About us

The interconnected nature and climate emergencies threaten us all. Experts say we’ve entered the sixth mass extinction – human activity is shredding ecosystems and habitats worldwide, destroying biodiversity and pushing huge numbers of species into freefall and extinction.

In Britain, nature – our life-support system, and one of our best allies in the urgent battle against climate breakdown – is being wrecked. Our country should be rich in life but instead we live in one of the world’s worst places for nature (State of Nature Report 2016 ranked UK 189 out of 218 countries).

From songbirds to insects to plankton, Britain’s species are collapsing – over half are declining, one-in-seven (15%) are crashing towards extinction, 2% are already gone. Our land and seas – with their precious habitats such as woodlands, wetlands, peatlands, rivers and coastal areas – have been stripped of their abundance and remarkable complexity of life. The UK is one of Europe’s least wooded countries (13% cover compared to European average of 37%); four-fifths of our globally important peatlands are damaged (transforming them from fantastic carbon sinks to carbon emitters); most of our rivers and seas are polluted by sewage and plastic.

Rewilding is a story of hope for tackling the nature and climate emergencies and delivering a cascade of benefits for people and local communities. Rewilding is the large-scale restoration of nature until it can take care of itself – and us – again. In a world wrecked by biodiversity loss, habitat destruction and climate breakdown, rewilding can replenish nature’s remarkable web of life – restoring native habitats, natural processes and the diversity and abundance of native species.

We want to see an inspiring mosaic of rewilding across 30% of our land and seas where nature is flourishing and delivering major benefits for people – including opportunities for vibrant green economies; healthier air, water and soils; and better health and wellbeing. This is a world we know is possible, if we only choose to make it happen.
